Mason was diagnosed with Pediatric Myelodysplastic Syndrome in January 2020 which progressed to Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Ultimately, Mason received a bone marrow transplant from an anonymous donor that has helped to save his life. “All we know about the donor is that she is a young woman from Germany. We will be forever grateful to her for her generosity and selflessness,” shares Kelley.
“Mason finished chemo in January 2021 and now we go to clinic each week for labs,” continues Kelley. “While he will have bone marrow biopsies every three months for a while, he can now get back to the business of being a kid again, playing outside or with LEGOS or watching Paw Patrol. He’s been through so much – I don’t know if I could have done it as an adult – and yet he seems unphased.”
Even on the rough days, one of the most important things to me was that he still experienced joy in the midst of really difficult treatment,” says Kelley, Mason’s mom. “It’s so comforting to know that Mason can laugh and play and just be a kid, even though he’s a kid who is surviving a terrible disease.”
